Hospitality technology for tomorrow

Hospitality technology for tomorrow

David Pearce, Technical Director at Star Micronics EMEA, talks about the printing technology available for order and pay apps, as well as web-based ordering systems.

David Pearce: With the adjustment to takeaway and delivery in hospitality, we have observed a huge technological shift over the past year.

We’ve seen a demand for native apps, as well as web-based technology, which customers can easily access to order and pay. There’s also been a notable rise in kiosk and self-service usage to order and collect food with many running tablet-based devices. The TSP654IISK, for example, is a welcome addition in this area. The liner-free sticky labels it creates track orders – which minimises missing or incorrect orders, thereby improving order accuracy.

Many restaurants are using a separate app from the POS for food ordering – which is often quicker than adding required new features to the existing POS system. Also, many are using kiosks in the entrance area for food ordering. Star produces several services and protocols – allowing you to print directly from a web-based app to a local, network or cloud-based printer.

Our support team has been helping software developers and web design companies with standard drivers and SDKs for POS systems, as well as Android and iOS tablets, alongside technology to enable web-based receipt and order printing. The compact, splash-proof printers of the Star mC-Print Series are ideally suited for this purpose.

With Star’s built-in CloudPRNT technology, your kitchen or bar customers pull orders directly from an online ordering system and print them remotely, without a tablet or input device.

Reliable Wi-Fi to avoid missed orders is also crucial. Star’s SteadyLAN technology, featured on select mC-Print models, effectively tethers tablets and mobile devices to the network via Ethernet to ensure continuous network access.
Star mC-Print and HI X printer ranges also act as a hub with connected peripherals, such as barcode scanners and customer displays, providing a complete stand-alone system.
