European Tobacco Products Directive – Zebra scanners and mobile computers for compliance

The European Tobacco Products Directive took effect May 19th, 2019. With Zebra’s track and trace technology, your customers in the tobacco industry guarantee compliance.

What the European Tobacco Products Directive means for your customers
Beginning on May 19th, 2019 the European Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) for cigarettes and roll-your-own tobacco products went into effect. The directive states the following: all of your customers involved in the tobacco business supply chain (distributors, wholesalers, retailers, mobile sellers with direct delivery to stores, merchandisers who refill cigarette automats or external contract partners) must guarantee that the tobacco products are traceable from end-to-end. Those who infringe risk financial and economic penalties.

Tracking via »track and trace«
All of the above-mentioned tobacco products sold on the European market must be marked with a tamper-proof security feature, allowing the tobacco products to be tracked via »track and trace«. Only 2D DotCodes and DataMatrix codes are approved for serialising.

This new directive requires more effort from your customers in the tobacco industry, and they need the right Zebra hardware to ensure compliance.
